The Coffee Day is one of those endearing traditions of Villaharta that, fueled by the affection of its residents, refuses to disappear. It is a day that invites coexistence, remembrance, and keeping the social history of our town alive.

In times past, when relationships between teenagers were much more difficult and less direct than they are now, the youth of Villaharta never missed an opportunity to celebrate a party or a dance. Historically, this celebration took place every November 13th, coinciding with the Feast of Saint Didacus, and served as the perfect stage for courtship.

The Cup Game

The dynamic was as simple as it was ingenious: the girls brought two cups to the party and placed them together on a table, while the boys brought some sweets. When it was time to have coffee (or hot chocolate for the younger ones), the boys would sit down in front of a pair of cups.

By doing so, they automatically chose as their partner the owner of that coffee set. Sometimes luck smiled on them and they got the choice right; other times not so much. That was the real fun of the party, a game that often encouraged innocent “cheating” to ensure the resulting pairings were the most desired ones.

Although today the main motive for matchmaking has completely disappeared (fortunately for new generations!), the people of Villaharta preserve this beautiful tradition that awakens unforgettable childhood and adolescent memories in many residents.

Currently, the entire community comes together to celebrate it in different ways. The City Council organizes activities in the “Fun Classroom” so that the little ones learn about their roots. For their part, the San Rafael Seniors’ Club prepares a large snack at the Day Center, where the best anecdotes emerge. The Women’s Association offers its members homemade chocolates and sweets, and the AMPA Miguel Delibes ensures there is no shortage of hot chocolate for all the children and teachers at the school.
