Fuente Agria Spa

Boca del Infierno Spring

A historical spring with a ferruginous character, born from the belly of an old water mine and surrounded by scrubland, which in the past nourished the old pavilions of the Villaharta spa with life and health.

Location and Surroundings of the Spring

To reach the Fuente Boca del Infierno, the visitor must enter the path leading to the Pedrique Monastery (or Vereda de los Pañeros) via the CO-420 road. After advancing to the Moheda farmhouse, the spring is located in front of it, a short distance away, hidden and protected by the low scrub vegetation of the Cordoba mountains.

This spring pours its waters directly into the Cañuelo stream, forming part of the hydrological system of the Guadalquivir basin through the Guadiato river.

Characteristics of the Spring and History

Characteristics of the Spring and History

This spring does not flow directly from the earth naturally on the surface; it is an excavated gallery, framework, or water mine. The mine consists of a narrowing in the rock, from which the iron-rich (ferruginous) water emerges. Interestingly, a small wall serves as a brake for the water before it leaves the mine.

Historically, this spring was of vital importance to the Villaharta thermal complex. In the early 20th century, its waters supplied a nearby spa. From it emerges a kind of ancient aqueduct, now disused, which served as a reference and channeled these sour waters to the nearby pavilions. Currently, the water pours into the stream as soon as it leaves the mine, keeping alive the local tradition of coming to drink its waters for therapeutic purposes.
