Neighbors and families of Villaharta
Villaharta celebrates on Holy Saturday one of its most beloved traditions: La Merendilla. Despite being part of Holy Week, this festivity stands out for its pagan character, becoming what many neighbors define as a pilgrimage without a saint.
It is a day where solemnity gives way to pure joy. The entire municipality moves to the countryside to enjoy a day of outdoor coexistence, uniting families and friends amidst laughter, singing, dancing, and traditional games.
The Origins of the Tradition
From a simple children’s prize to the great country party of an entire town.
Born in the 40s
The celebration originally arises as a prize intended for children who confess as preparation for making their First Communion.
Loin and Hornazo
The traditional gift consists of a tasty slice of loin accompanied by a bread hornazo, a menu that has become the symbol of the festivity.
Families Join In
Over time, parents joined the celebration bringing their own food, transforming the event into the great community meal we know today.
